I purchased a 2003 volvo s80 t6 with 120 000 kms on the clock. Soon i noticed that the car seemed to rattle and it has a hard suspension. The car does not handle or feel like a prestige car. The noise it makes on the road surface is irritating. Is this common to these cars?
Answer:The stiff suspension is a by-product of handling so you can feel the road better, The rattling is probably your sway bar link rods or your strut mount bushings and bearings. another common suspension issue on these is the control arm bushings. One last unrelated thing check your timing belt for cracks.
I saw an S80 where the third brake light - the bar in the rear windshield - flashed like a warning every time the driver hit the brakes. Is this an add-on or something new for Volvo? I have a 1999 S80 and am interested in adding this safety feature to my car. Thanks!
Answer:No this is not factory installed. To my knowledge some car companies (mercedes) are starting to look at putting a feature in to strobe the brake lights in emergency braking maneuvers, but this is not the norm. Especially if the brake light flashes every time the vehicle brakes, then this would defeat the purpose of alerting people to an emergency stop or a driver attempting an emergency braking maneuver. I've included a link below of a sample brake light flasher add-on. Lexus also has something similar to the mercedes, but it acts more so in an offensive sense and not a defensive sense. On their european models of the LS 600h they have a rear millimeter wave radar that monitors traffic behind you and if a person is coming up too fast when you are slowing or stopped, it will flash your brake lights at them as a precautionary measure. If you would like to add this feature onto your car, look into a third party market as your volvo dealer will not do this for you for liability reasons. Volvo does have something called crash warning with brake assist, where if you are about to rear-end someone it will flash a simulated brake light on your windshield to alert you to them stopping. Let me know if you need any more assistance or have any more questions about this or other automotive safety issues.

Answer:My Dad owns this car. Other than a recall for the throttle body, the car has been trouble free for the 100k+ miles that he has owned it since new. As long as the car was well maintained, there should be no problems.
